From Swiss Alpine Village to Glacier 3000: Oakridgers’ Journey
- 1 July 2023
Oakridge International School Visakhapatnam is proud to announce the successful completion of its students’ expedition to the Swiss Alps. The 8-day expedition, led by trained Nord Anglia Education guides, provided students with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the stunning Alpine surroundings while engaging in a range of challenging and enriching activities. The expedition aimed to empower and develop the participating students’ personal growth, resilience, and global citizenship.
The expedition included 11 students and two educators who journeyed from the Alpine village of Les Plans-Sur-Bex to Glacier 3000, where they explored the impact of climate change on high glacial environments. Students received comprehensive instruction in navigation, camp craft, cooking, and other vital techniques necessary for survival in the Alpine terrain. They honed their teamwork and leadership abilities, preparing them for the challenges they would face in the days to come.
The highlight of the expedition was a two-day, one-night journey through the local Alpine terrain. Students embarked on a trek from Les Martinets to a mountain chalet, where they stayed overnight. They put their newly acquired skills to the test on day two, leading themselves and their teams on a different route back to Les Martinets. This allowed them to further develop their confidence, decision-making abilities, and group management skills in challenging conditions.
In addition to the physical challenges, the expedition also provided opportunities for students to explore the cultural and culinary delights of Switzerland. A visit to the historic town of Gruyères introduced them to the world-renowned Swiss cheese and chocolate, while exploring the Château de Gruyères deepened their understanding of Swiss heritage and traditions.
“Our students returned from the Nord Anglia Expedition with a newfound sense of empowerment and resilience. The expedition provided a unique platform for our students to develop their leadership and teamwork skills while expanding their horizons and forming lifelong friendships”, said Ms. Shaila Bhamidipati, Principal, Oakridge International School Visakhapatnam.
“The expedition was an unforgettable adventure,” said one of the participating students. “We learned so much about ourselves and the world around us. It was truly an enriching experience”, remarked another.
“This Nord Anglia Expedition in Swiss Alps provides our students with an unparalleled opportunity to discover the magic of the mountains in challenging, yet secured, environment”, said Amit Jain, School Director. Physical endurance is combined with breath taking scenery allowing them to embrace new perspectives and expand their horizons. Oakridge International School Visakhapatnam looks forward to future Nord Anglia Education expeditions.
