Exploring the Wonders of Biochemistry: A Field Trip for the IBDP 1&2 and Grade 12 Learners

  • 5 October 2024

On the 1st of October, our IBDP 1&2 and Grade 12 biology students set out on an educational trip to the state-of-the-art labs at Chandigarh University. It was anticipated that such a visit would enhance their understanding of the subject as they were about to practically experience some of the rarest and finest arrangements that would never fit within the boundaries of any school.

As part of the visit, students had the chance to interact with and achieve some exceptional learning outcomes acquired through the following advanced devices:

PCR Machine

It is a well-known device in molecular biology, the students  observed how this machine amplifies DNA through the Polymerase Chain Reaction, being used for biotechnology, medical science, and forensic science.

Bomb Calorimeter

An Instrument employed to measure the energy content in materials that make up a particular object. Calorimetry was defined to the students as a method that is used to measure energy in food, fuel, and the like.

Hydraulic Machine

A good demonstration of how hydraulic systems function showing how machines control hydraulic systems from the car brake system to heavy-duty equipment such as construction equipment.

Magnetron

A high-powered microwave that has been used mostly in microwave appliances used in cooking, and heating among other things as well as in constructing radars. The lab representatives specially explained how this device plays a critical role in generating the electromagnetic waves for various technological devices.

This remarkable journey from Oakridge to Chandigarh University was intended to educate the learners and kindle their inquisitiveness about facts in science and related STEM activities. The students were given a unique opportunity to use theories in practice, especially in science and technology, and realize the significance of ethically adhering to the safety measures while performing all the experiments. Our curious students were highly engaged and actively participated in the experiments under the correct supervision, following all the precautionary measures.
This was a perfect occasion for the learners’ engagement in the lessons aiding them to stimulate their philosophical approaches to the material learned, and it also instilled the passion within them to explore more factual and experimental knowledge about the vast areas of ever-upgrading chemical sciences. In such an advanced learning environment, facilitating group discussions, interactions, and limitless assistance of the lab professionals and teachers, the trip turned out quite informative and unforgettable, the significant outcomes of which shall be evident from their performance reflections in the future.
