  • 28 November 2024

The three-day OISV Model United Nations (MUN) at Oakridge International School Visakhapatnam wrapped up on a high note, leaving delegates inspired and more aware of the world’s most pressing issues. Open to students from grades 8-12, the event brought together bright young minds from different schools to debate global challenges, propose solutions, and engage in diplomatic dialogue on issues that matter.

Day 1: A Strong Start with Powerful Words

The inauguration ceremony on Day 1 set the tone, with the chief guest, Vijaya Bhaskar Marisetty, delivering an inspiring address. Dr. Marisetty, the Dean (Academics) and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Chair Professor (Fintech & Financial Inclusion) at the Indian Institute of Management, Visakhapatnam, spoke passionately about the role of students in shaping a sustainable future. He highlighted the importance of collective action to address global challenges such as climate change and access to clean water. “Change begins at home,” he emphasized, encouraging the students to think globally but act locally in their efforts to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). His speech resonated with the delegates, urging them to not only be informed but also be active participants in solving grassroots problems.

The opening session marked the beginning of intense discussions and debates, as delegates represented various countries and engaged in problem-solving dialogue focused on real-world issues.

Day 2: Intriguing Sessions

The second day of the conference witnessed vigorous discussions with students focusing on solutions or tackling specific problems in the world. There were heated arguments during the sessions, as delegates strove to come up with resolutions that addressed issues of climate change, poverty, global health, education inequalities, and many others. This stage provided students with opportunities to practice and appreciate alternative views and engage in creative discourse that is essential for change.

 Day 3: The Awards Night

Last day of MUN OISV advanced with the awarding of the best delegates which placed the climax of the event where most of the best participants were awarded. The most distinguished diplomat award goes to those who possess such attributes as critical thinking, strong diplomacy and originality in presentation of ideas. Such awards were important for the students as they recognized their hard work during the conference while seeking solutions to issues affecting the world.

Shaila Bhamidipati, Principal of Oakridge International School Visakhapatnam, lauded the event, stating, “These sessions are crucial in raising students’ awareness about global issues and empowering them to understand grassroots problems. Such events help them raise their voices on any platform.” She also praised the organizing committee for their tireless work, ensuring that the MUN conference was a valuable and enriching experience for all participants.

Madhuri Gupta, Program Coordinator for OISV MUN, echoed this sentiment, noting, “OISV MUN is not just a forum for debate; it’s a space where young minds can shape the future through innovative ideas, diplomacy, and a strong sense of global responsibility. We are proud to witness the growth of these future leaders.”

A Milestone in Oakridge’s Commitment to Global Awareness

Success can be stated, because the three-day OISV MUN provided the students with the opportunity to now understand how to handle international issues while practicing the strengths of diplomacy, leadership and problem-solving. This is in fact reflective of the principles by which Oakridge International School Visakhapatnam upholds, that of encouraging critical thought, leadership and international perspective among students.

As the event drew to a close, it was clear that OISV MUN had not only educated the delegates but also empowered them to become proactive agents of change, equipped with the tools to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges. The success of this event is a reminder of the importance of creating spaces where young people can develop the skills, knowledge, and mindset needed to shape a better future.
