How IB Theory of Knowledge (TOK) manifests in the real world?

What is TOK – Theory of Knowledge?
TOK fosters a love for lifelong learning and inquiry. It instills a curiosity-driven mindset and encourages individuals to continually seek knowledge, question assumptions, and explore different areas of knowledge. This lifelong learning approach promotes personal growth, intellectual development, and adaptability in an ever-changing VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous) world.
The TOK course provides students with an opportunity to explore and reflect on the nature of knowledge and the process of knowing. In TOK, students reflect on the knowledge, beliefs and opinions that they have built up from their years of academic studies and their lives outside the classroom. The course is intended to be challenging and thought-provoking—as well as empowering—for students. Theory of Knowledge is where perception meets reality and the intertwining of these two is what enriches knowledge and therefore, the knower.
In Oakridge International School, Bengaluru, the cohort of 2022-24, began their TOK assessment through an exciting TOK Exhibition. It was an exploration of “How TOK manifests In the Real Word?”. Students used a variety of objects personally relevant to them such as turmeric, electric guitar, a half-saree, a deceased grandpa’s ring, etc., to showcase their exploration of their chosen internal assessment prompt. It gave students an opportunity to exhibit their critical thinking skills through the amazing connections they weave between TOK and the world that surrounds us, finally asking themselves, “How do I know what I claim to know?”
What is TOK Essay?
In the second year of the IB Diploma Programme, students will engage in preparing for the TOK Essay, which is externally assessed. TOK essay engages students in a formal, sustained piece of writing in response to one of the six titles that are prescribed by the IB for each examination session. These titles take the form of the best questions that are focused on the areas of knowledge.
Oakridge International School, Bengaluru develops critical thinking skills and promotes self-awareness and ethical considerations among its students. By enhancing communication and argumentation abilities, fostering interdisciplinary perspectives, and encouraging personal development, Theory of Knowledge bridges the gap between academic knowledge and its application in the real world. It equips students with the tools to navigate the complexities of the real world and make informed decisions that positively impact their lives and society.
