What is Bangalore JMUN?
- 8 September 2023
The eighth edition of Bangalore Junior Model United Nations (JMUN) Conference will be held on 13th & 14th October 2023 at Oakridge International School, Bengaluru!
Our IBDP student and the Co-President of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) committee at JMUN 2022 Arjun writes about the prestigious event hosted by the student leaders of Oakridge.
Model United Nations (MUN) is far more than just another extracurricular activity at Oakridge International School, Bengaluru. It is a rigorous platform that challenges delegates to hone their skills in diplomacy, negotiation, and public speaking. In today’s rapidly changing world, these skills are more crucial now than ever, equipping young minds to navigate the complex generation-defining challenges that lie ahead.
What makes Bangalore JMUN stand out is its focus on nurturing younger delegates, specifically those in grades 6 through 8. While most MUN conferences are designed for older students, Bangalore JMUN aims to provide a foundational experience that can shape a delegate’s future in global diplomacy.
Oakridge International School, Bengaluru campus offers an inspiring setting for the intellectual engagement of JMUN. Scheduled to take place on 13th and 14th October 2023, the conference features a diverse array of committees tailored to accommodate delegates with varying levels of experience—from novices to seasoned participants.
One of the unique aspects of Bangalore JMUN is the adoption of the UN4MUN format, which more closely mimics the actual procedures of the United Nations, as compared to the UNA-USA format used by most. This not only adds a layer of authenticity but also fosters a collaborative environment, encouraging delegates to work together in a manner similar to their real-world counterparts.
Serving as Co-President of the UNSC committee last year was an eye-opening experience for me. It gave me a newfound respect for the meticulous planning and effort that goes into chairing a committee. I was particularly moved by the exceptional talent displayed by the delegates. One memorable moment was when a delegate representing Ukraine delivered a speech so compelling that it earned her a round of applause from not just her fellow delegates but also the attending press.
What was even more heartwarming was witnessing the personal growth of some of my more reserved delegates. Over the course of the conference, I saw them break out of their shells, gaining the confidence to voice their opinions and actively participate in debates.
With a highly competent Secretariat and Executive Board lined up for this year, the upcoming Bangalore JMUN promises to be one of the most exciting and enriching experiences yet for all involved.
