Why leadership skills are important for students
- 26 September 2022
It’s important for students to experience leadership opportunities during their schooling, to learn the art of building relationships within teams, defining identities, and achieving tasks effectively. It also provides an opportunity to learn to identify and display effective communication and interpersonal skills .Student Leadership is the process of involving students in meaningful ways both in and beyond the confines of the classroom. There are many opportunities for the students to engage in activities that promote and encourage values of respect and responsibility. One such platform is the School Student Council, which encompasses many responsibilities, formulating rules and regulations within the framework of the broader school policy and, most importantly, becoming advocates of a positive change in the school culture and environment. The selection of student council is a rigorous process that starts with an opportunity for each child of the relevant grades to self-nominate. During their self-nomination, they answer some key questions on leadership and self-introspect. The shortlisted students are then scored on a few key points like- a sense of responsibility, leadership, discipline, etc. Following this round, they meet the panel for an interview. A few positions are based on interviews. The school Presidents and the Committee Presidents head for the elections after the Interview. After the New council is elected/Selected, schools organise a formal Investiture Ceremony, In the Investiture Ceremony the new leadership takes an oath to serve the school and the student community they represent with utmost loyalty and sincerity. Also this is followed by leadership training sessions to help student council sharpen their skills as they take baby steps into being the future leaders of this world.
