Revolutionizing Education: The MIT-Nord Anglia STEAM Programme Launches at Oakridge International School, Visakhapatnam

Oakridge International Schools are now part of the world’s leading premium schools organisation, Nord Anglia Education. As a member of Nord Anglia Education group, Oakridge, one of the best schools in Visakhapatnam is the first school in India to access the unique partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and run the NAE/MIT Challenges with the students for the coming academic year.

Nord Anglia Education has collaborated with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to prepare students for adult life in our rapidly-evolving world, equipping them with the skills and techniques to thrive. Through hands-on, interdisciplinary learning of STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, art and maths), children will develop the transferrable skills needed to invent the future they will ultimately inherit. Students will learn from MIT researchers, scientists and experts at the forefront of these fields, as well as taking a hands-on approach to problem-solving. The first leg of the MIT Steam programme will kick start this year at Oakridge International School, Visakhapatnam, which will be spearheaded by Teacher Coach Dr.Pallavi Joshi.

Dr. Joshi is a Ph.D. in Molecular Oncology from Purdue University and has worked as a research scientist at the Yale University. She joined the Oakridge family in 2014 and since then has engaged successfully in multiple roles within the organisation. She recently completed 4 years as an IB-trained facilitator of ESS and Biology and 3 years as EE research coordinator with consistently higher than world-average results track record. She is skilled in curriculum design and instruction; is an IB examiner of DP ESS and is proficient in the MYP Biology/IDU e-assessment as well. She will be taking part in the MIT Specialised teacher training this month and will be one of the first teachers from India to attend this esteemed training programme. This unique training opportunity includes a range of workshops in line with the coming MIT Challenge theme – “Discovering Science through Compelling Images”. Content of the sessions will range from technologies used in researching the deep ocean, identifying infectious microbes and communicating complex scientific concepts through stunning imagery.

MIT faculty will set three real-world, open-ended tasks for students. These challenges require your child to work in teams to solve issues using ideas which cross disciplines. Designed to test students’ problem-solving capabilities, refine transferrable skills, develop interdisciplinary approaches, and encourage thinking outside of the box, these series of challenges will be interconnected and span the academic year. The challenges will vary from year-to-year, focusing on themes such as space, nanotechnology, building future cities and genetic engineering.

“The MIT Nord Anglia STEAM programme is a revolutionary addition to our educational offering here in the city of Visakhapatnam. The unique challenges that students will take up during the programme will allow them to explore ingenuity, innovation and creativity from the best in the world. It will make them creative problem solvers for the future” says Biju Baby, Principal of Oakridge International School, Visakhapatnam.
