The Essential Benefits of a Nutritious Start to the Day for Children

Breakfast is often referred to as the most important meal of the day, and yes, it is. It provides us with the energy and nutrients we need to start the day off right, and this is especially important for schoolchildren. In this blog, we will discuss the top 5 reasons why children should not skip breakfast, and how parents can tackle this problem.

1. Improved cognitive function

A nutritious breakfast has been shown to improve cognitive function and concentration in children. Studies have found that children who eat breakfast perform better on assessments, have better memory recall and experience less fatigue throughout the day.

2. Better physical health

Skipping breakfast can lead to weight gain, as children may be more likely to make poor food choices later in the day. Eating a healthy breakfast can also help to regulate blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

3. Better mood and behaviour

Children who skip breakfast are more likely to experience irritability, lack of motivation and difficulty focusing. Eating breakfast can help to improve mood and behavior, leading to a more positive school experience for both children and teachers.

4. Better academic performance

Children who eat healthy breakfast are more likely to achieve better academic performance. They have better attendance, behaviour and demonstrate the characteristics of IB learner in curricular and co-curricular activities.

5. Social benefits

Having breakfast together as a family is a great way to start the day. However, with working parents rushing to the office in the morning, the quality time is lost. Enrolling in a breakfast programme at school gives children the opportunity to socialise and interact with their peers before the school day begins.

In conclusion, skipping breakfast can have a detrimental effect on the health, mood and academic performance of children. Breakfast at school is a way to ensure the nutritional needs of children are fulfilled. Not only will it benefit the child, but it will also contribute to family bonding when the child narrates the story of the delicious variety of food they had at school during the day!
