Being amongst the top international schools in India, we use an inquiry-based teaching and learning. As a Hindi language facilitator, I have observed tremendous results in my student cohort by following this approach. This method allows learners to develop deeper understanding of the topics and enables them to apply their learning to the real world.

Not just in English, we also emphasize the importance of becoming proficient in additional languages. We teach Punjabi, Hindi and French to develop International Mindedness amongst the students. We use inquiry to achieve that goal. This gets students actively involved and excited about learning another language.

 

What is Inquiry-Based Learning?

Teaching through traditional method makes the learners recite whatever is taught in the class, no matter whether they understand it or not. On the contrary, through Inquiry-based learning, learners are given different tasks to complete through inquiry method and on the basis of these tasks their knowledge is tested.  

Inquiry gives the learners considerably more autonomy, encouraging them to take the initiative in the learning process. In Inquiry-based learning teachers act as facilitators. They provide guidance and support according to the age-level and understanding-level of their learners.

How language flourishes through Inquiry-based learning?

Inquiry helps in learning a new language by making it fun and also interesting. Powerful learning experiences increases participation and helping learners consistently stay motivated and engaged. Inquiry-based learning is a natural way to learn a second language. It encourages learner’s curiosity and sense of wonder about the world around them. It promotes a deeper understanding of the content because the process of asking open questions and solving them through original strategies empowers students to take ownership of their learning. It is always good to go with inquiry-based learning as it develops learners motor skills. This also develops their interests and curiosity about the topic taught in the class.
